Broadband Connectivity and the 2012 London Olympics

broadband connectivity olympicsTime is running out. If you are on ADSL we recommend moving to our Ethernet (EFM) / Fibre type connectivity as soon as possible in order to ensure uncontended access to our cloud. Its an affordable alternative to bridging the gap between broadband connectivity and leased lines.

From the first week of June 2012 until early September 2012, there will be a number of major events taking place that will have a direct impact on the UK’s internet network infrastructure through the increase in demand for broadband connectivity and internet bandwidth, especially during the London Olympics. The events being as follows:

    • HRH The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – June 4th and 5th
    • Euro 2012 Football Championships – June 8th to July 1st
    • Wimbledon 2012 – June 25th to July 8th
    • The Open Golf Championship – July 19th to 22nd
    • The Olympic Games – July 27th to August 12th
    • The Paralympic Games – August 29th to September 9th

The demand for internet bandwidth will markedly increase during all of these events.  There is also expected to be an increase in home working for those who conduct business in London during the Olympics and many companies are actively encouraging employees to do this.

Transport for London has advised all suppliers that street works along key Olympic routes will be suspended between then and the completion of the Paralympics.  In addition to this, the general increase in security means that we expect delays for any services requiring civil engineering in the remainder of London or in locations outside of London where Olympic events are being held (e.g. Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow, Coventry and Weymouth).

Increased security measures are also expected to impact site access, including but not limited to restrictions to carrier hotels, underground cable routing, and points of presence, especially in the East London area. Cloud Computing Centre’s multiple communications feed to our Data Centres, IP Transit and NOC environment area are fully managed with the highest SLA’s available, we therefore do not expect any disruption to our services.

We would recommend to any Partner / End User that relies on any form of DSL (broadband) connectivity to seriously consider upgrading to an Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) / Fibre type connectivity as soon as possible to avoid the expected disruption.  DSL connectivity is expected to be effected, either by contention or latency, DSL type services are an unmanaged type and therefore any disruption or failure will only be fixed by ‘best endeavour’ type commitments.

Cloud Computing Centre can provide cost for the supply EFM, Leased Line connections to public facing (Internet) and our private MPLS network.
